Stokes Mentoring Program

"The number one indicator of success for a child is a good relationship with a caring adult" - Fortune Magazine

Our Program

Our program tries to provide our students with something that is very difficult to achieve in the classroom setting: one on one attention. Any child can benefit from individualized attention from a caring adult. We make every effort to provide 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students who have been  identified as being in need of a mentor with a caring, responsible adult. The student and mentor meet once a week, for approximately one hour, during school hours. Each relationship is different, but the core remains the same. The mentor supports the child's efforts and helps them reach their full potential.

Our Students

Mentors can help our Stokes’ students in many ways:

  • improving academic achievement
  • developing gifts and talents
  • increasing self esteem/self confidence
  • improving a student's ability to get along with others.
  • overcoming shyness
  • overcoming aggressiveness
  • increasing self esteem/self confidence

A recent study by Procter & Gamble shows that students with mentors are more likely to stay in school, more likely to achieve and aspire to better grades, and more likely to go on to college! Mentors help Stokes’ children in many ways. Click here for more statistics!

"Mentoring is to be a wise and trusted friend and guide"

Our Mentors

Our mentors come from all walks of life but they all have one thing in common: They all care about the children here at Stokes and want to make a difference. All of our mentors go through an extensive interview process, background check as well as an in-depth training.

Volunteer Now If you are interested in becoming a mentor or learning more about the Stokes Mentoring Program, please feel free to call Jennifer Truitt  at 697-3205.

Mentors say they "get far more from being a mentor than they give." - President George Bush

"I want all of Delaware's children to succeed...We the people of Delaware, not just the government, can do something about it. I am asking volunteers to join me as mentors throughout Delaware, working with youngsters who are at risk of failing in school and in life... Please join me as a mentor to a child in need." -

Senator Tom Carper.
