      A Note from Mr. Miklus...

Who is the New Principal???

Hi,

My name is Corey Miklus and I am the new Principal at Nellie H. Stokes Elementary.  I am a native of Pennsylvania where I received my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from East Stroudsburg University.

I moved to Delaware in 1997 to begin my teaching career with the Caesar Rodney School District.  I began teaching at Star Hill Elementary as both a second and third grade teacher. While I was a teacher I was the assistant coach for the Caesar Rodney boys and girl’s soccer teams as well as the wrestling coach at Postlethwait Middle School. During that time, I obtained my master’s degree from Delaware State University in Curriculum and Instruction and received a certificate in Administration.   From there I became the Assistant Principal at W.B. Simpson Elementary.

The last two school years I was the principal of Woodbridge Elementary in the Woodbridge School District.  Outside of school I enjoy outdoor activities such as biking, running, and spending time with my family.

I look forward to meeting and getting to know everyone in the Stokes community.

A few “fun” ways for parents to encourage writing at home

  • Encourage your child to keep a daily journal to record thoughts, feelings, and happenings. The journal doesn’t have to be fancy. A simple notebook works as well as a commercially produced journal.
  •
  • Create a scrapbook of a vacation, a family outing, a school trip, or a school year. Have your child write an introduction, headings, picture captions, and titles. (My son loves to make books using pictures from our family trips!)
  • Encourage written personal correspondence (thank you notes, friendly letters, invitations) as well as business correspondence (requests, inquiries, complaints) in both hand-written and word processed formats.
  • Encourage your child to help write grocery lists, to-do lists, notes, directions, material lists, and accurate phone messages.
  • Turn your home into a print-rich environment by allowing your child easy access to magazines, books, maps, manuals, cookbooks, menus, television guides, newspapers, direction and other reading materials.
  • Spend quality time together playing commercial word games such as Scrabble, Boggle, and crossword puzzles.

Most importantly, let your children see you reading and writing to promote their efforts in school.
